It’s Steve Rosenbaum from SteveRosenbaum.com. I’ve got a little tip for you. I’m working in LinkedIn right now. I thought I’d let you look over my shoulders. You know, when it comes to building relationships, as one of the four categories in your SSI score, you’re going to reach out to a lot of people.

I’m in the midst of an outreach campaign right now. And I want to show you something that you want to keep tidy in your account, because this probably affects your SSI score. And certainly you don’t want to let it get too unwieldy. Here’s what I’m talking about. Let me switch over here to my desktop view.

When you reach out to people each and every day you send them a connection message. And if you go under my network, here’s something you may not know. When you go here to your invitations, you can see that I’m very active right now in this outreach campaign, I have 195 people that want to connect with me.

I’m going through these one by one, sending them a message, something you definitely want to do. Take a look at this tab that says “Sent”. These are invitations you have sent out in the past that have not been accepted. Right now I have 178.

I had gotten up to as high as 305 when I started this. And I thought, I’d show you what I’m doing, because this is important. You don’t want to let these go too long. If you do, you could end up getting penalized. It is rumored, that this is one of the factors that LinkedIn looks into is how many of these connection requests you have outstanding.

Because if you’ve got a lot outstanding, I guess the thought is maybe you’re automating. Maybe you’re doing something that’s not right. Maybe you’re reaching out to people you shouldn’t. So the bottom line is after some period of time, you can see these are I’m at two months.

Here’s what I do. I go to the bottom and then I go to the last page here, which is page two. And I’ll just start withdrawing these. It’s a fairly tedious process, but you can get through it in 15 minutes, not a big deal. You just simply say withdrawal and confirm it. Give it a second to refresh. You’ll see, she goes away. Next one comes up and just repeat the process, go through it.

I’m down to one 76. I’ll keep doing this until I get down to the past few weeks to a month. Certainly if you get up over a couple hundred start withdrawing them. Nobody knows for sure, but I have heard it said that this could count against you in your SSI score.

It certainly could come against you when they’re looking at you. And wondering if you are working LinkedIn authentically. Authenticity is what LinkedIn wants. They want you authentically working here, building your network and not automating it and not doing spam and all that kind of stuff.

There’s my tip for you today. It is keeping your invitations sent clean. It’s an important step to log into LinkedIn right now. And go ahead and go through that process and just know that this is just one of the many things that I teach in my LinkedIn Dominance program, but I wanted to share it with you so that you can improve your SSI score in your own account.

1. Recording Instructions

First of all, everything has to start with a good, clean recording. So turn off all phones, computer beeps and try to minimize background noise such as fans, air conditioners, etc.,  as much as possible. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be in a soundproof studio because I will show you how to take out all remaining background noise, but you want to start with as pristine a recording as possible.  Even though I own some very expensive microphones, I still think my Logitech H360 Headset delivers the best quality sound for my podcasts.

Start your recording and keep totally silent at the very beginning and end of your recording for at least 10 seconds.  You will use this silence to get a profile of the background noise in your room. Once you start recording, don’t stop or pause. If you make a mistake, be silent for about 2 seconds and then clap twice to mark the spot you need to edit.

2. Save Your “Raw” File

Once you are done recording, Immediately save your file with the word “Raw” at the end of the file name.

3. Edit Your Recording

Save a copy of your file replacing the word “Raw” with “Edited” after the file name. (Do this first so you don’t accidentally save over your “Raw” file). Audacity might ask you if you want to save a copy of all files to which you should answer “Yes”. Perform all of your edits but leave the 10 seconds of silence at the beginning and end of your track.

4. Sweetening Your Recording

Save a copy of your file replacing the word “Edited” with “Sweetened” after the file name. The next several steps, called “Sweetening”, will greatly enhance the sound quality of your recording.

5. Get Your Noise Profile

Select the 10 seconds of silence at the beginning of your track and then choose “Noise Removal” from the Effect Menu. Making sure that you have the silence on your track selected, press the “Get Noise Profile” button.

6. Remove Noise

With your Noise Profile set, return to your track and select the entire recording, except for the silence at the beginning and end. Once again, choose “Noise Removal” from the Effect Menu. This time, simply press the “OK” button (do not alter any of the settings). You will see Audacity remove the background noise from your track. 

Make sure that your recorded track remains selected for the remaining sweetening steps.

7. Normalize

Choose “Normalize” from the Effect Menu and enter the settings pictured below. Press “OK”.

8. Dynamic Range Compressor

Choose “Dynamic Range Compressor” from the Effect Menu and enter the settings pictured below. Press “OK”.

9. Bass Boost

Choose “Equalization” from the Effect Menu. From the “Select Curve” dropdown box choose “Bass Boost”. Press “OK”.

10. Treble Boost

Choose “Equalization” from the Effect Menu. From the “Select Curve” dropdown box choose “Treble Boost”. Press “OK”.

11. Normalize Again

Choose “Normalize” from the Effect Menu and enter the settings pictured below. Press “OK”.

12. Hard Limter

Choose “Hard Limter” from the Effect Menu and enter the settings pictured below. Press “OK”

13. Remove Silence

Select and delete the silent areas used for your background noise profile.

14. Save Your “Final” Files

Save a copy of your file replacing the word “Sweetened” with “Final” after the file name. Also Export the file as an MP3. This will be the file used as your podcast. Fill in the “Meta Data” and upload to your file server.

How did I get the Wall Street Journal to write about me? Simple. I sent them a link to my impressive podcast listing on Itunes. Within a few weeks I also booked speaking engagements with the local Board of Realtors, Chamber of Commerce and an online university.

It all started with my podcast.

The problem is, to do podcasts right, requires a lot of work and a whole lot of ingenuity.  Producing the audio, publishing the content, creating the syndication feeds, getting the Itunes listing, creating web pages, and distributing each and every episode. Plus, Facebook, Twitter and social media were all in their infancy, so it was really hard to make it go viral.

My podcast was a huge factor in launching my expert status and in building my following.  I’ve been wanting to do more podcasts, but have not done so yet because of the huge amount of time and effort it takes.
